The New Orleans Saints are 0-2 for the fourth-consecutive year, so what are their odds of making the playoffs?

Well, they aren't very good.

Since 2007, 83 teams have started 0-2, and only nine went on to make the playoffs.

That means only 9.2% of the teams that began their respective seasons 0-2 made the playoffs.

It should also be pointed out that one of those teams, the 2008 San Diego Chargers, made the playoffs with an 8-8 record.

Who are the other teams to make the playoffs despite an 0-2 start since 2007?

Well, just last year, the Dolphins made it, with the Texans and Seahawks accomplishing the feat in 2015. The Colts did it in 2014, with the others being the 2013 Panthers, the 2008 Vikings and the 2007 Giants.

So, starting 0-2 is not necessarily a death sentence. The Dolphins started 0-2 last year, and still made the playoffs, and the Seahawks began 0-2 in 2015, and rebounded to make it all the way to the Super Bowl.

But teams that started 0-2 since 2007 normally played themselves out of playoff contention early.

Digging even deeper, since the current expanded playoff format has been in place since 1990, only 12.5% of teams that started 0-2 ended up making the playoffs.

In the 14 seasons that have followed, 27 teams have started a campaign with at least two losses and eventually made the playoffs. Some even made deep playoff runs.

Here is a look at those teams:

Won Super Bowl: 1993 Dallas Cowboys, 2001 New England Patriots, and 2007 New York Giants

Lost Super Bowl: 1996 New England Patriots and 2015 Seattle Seahawks.

Lost in championship game: 2014 Indianapolis Colts, 2003 Philadelphia Eagles, and 1998 New York Jets.

So, the good news is that it is not unprecedented for an 0-2 to still make the playoffs, and even advance deep into them.
The bad news it that the odds are very much against the Saints.
