LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL) -- Two people have been arrested after a 3-year-old child was found lifeless at a home on Kaliste Saloom Road.

21-year-old Landon Broussard, the boyfriend of the boy's mother, is charged with first degree murder.

22-year-old Laura Smith, the child's mother, is charged with principle to first degree murder.

According to Capt. Kip Judice with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, Broussard allegedly injured the toddler over an extended period of time.

"...the child had injuries both fresh and healing, indicating prolonged abuse," Judice says.

Judice says 911 received a call Thursday morning from the home on Kaliste Saloom Road near E. Brosusard Road.

When deputies arrived at the home, Judice says they found the child "in grave condition" and immediately began administering CPR.

The child was taken to Women's and Children's Hospital where he died shortly after arrival, Judice says.

Judice says the child does not live at the Kaliste Saloom Road home. He says the home belongs to the mother of the man whom the child's biological mother is dating.
