Mass was underway at St. Landry Catholic Church when police say two men started fighting right outside of the church.

One man was shot to death, and another man was wounded after being shot in front of the church in Opelousas.

This all started just after the 5 o'clock evening mass got underway according to KATC.

Police Chief Donald Thompson says that they will not lose control of the city, and that they will be sitting down with the district attorney, and make sure that people causing trouble are put away.

Opelousas Police Spokeswoman Sergeant Crystal Leblanc added that gun violence must stop, and they this will add staff and work around the clock if they have to stop the violence in the city.

Mayor  of Opelousas Reggie Tatum says the city marshal and the sheriff's office will also be adding their help in working to put a stop to the problem.
