A number of people have represented the Acadiana area in the National Football League.

All summer long, we're going to spotlight the fantastic athletes from the area, people that were actually born in one of the Acadiana parishes, that went on to play football at the highest level, the NFL.

Today, Roy Young.

As far as we can tell, Young was the very first person that was born in the Acadiana area that went on to play in the NFL.

Born on September 11, 1917, in Abbeville, Young went on to play college football at Texas A&M, where he was tabbed an All-Southwest Conference selection in both 1936 and 1937.

Following his time in College Station, Texas, Young was selected in the 7th round, with the 59th-overall pick, by the Washington Redskins in the 1938 NFL Draft..

A 6-foot-2, 215-pound offensive lineman, Young made his NFL debut in 1938, at the age of 21, playing in 9 games for the Redskins, including one start.

That would be the only season of professional football for Young, however, as he decided to retire n order to become a professional boxer.

After a few years of boxing professionally, Young became a doctor and spent the rest of his life in the Scottsdale, Arizona area, where he passed away in 1987.
