It was announced last May that American Idol was canceled by Fox and would end after its 15th season, which just began this month.

But...

EW reports that Ryan Seacrest has hinted the show may continue on after all, after saying that the panelists were told to call this the 'farewell season,' not the 'final season.'

We’re all pleased people are watching, and some are coming back to watch the show who maybe didn’t watch it the last couple years. So when you got a franchise with this heritage, and you’ve got a franchise [watched by] X-amount of millions of people, that sustains. Does that mean it’s the end? I’m not so sure.

EW goes on to say that while Fox is 'adamant' that this is the final season of American Idol it will air, that doesn't mean it's necessarily the end. Freemantle Media, which owns American Idol, may decide to move the show to another network after the strong ratings performance so far this season.
