This Lafayette Post Office Location is Atrocious—and Quite Frankly, We Deserve Better
When the Bertrand Drive Post Office first opened, not that many years ago, businesses and residents in the area were delighted to have a post office on that side of town. It was attractive, bright inside, fresh and the staff was very friendly. Look at it now.
The Bertrand Drive Post Office is a prime example of what happens without proper management, a maintenance budget or both.
The outside looks like it may be abandoned. The sign is broken, the grounds are littered with trash, landscaping less than attractive, and mildew and rust stain the exterior.
The inside is not much better. Hardly any of the light fixtures have working bulbs, the ceiling is filthy from HVAC vents, wall billboards haven't had any attention in ages, emergency lighting dangles from the wall and a mail accessories area that is understocked.
The back door of the post office stayed broken for months. At first, it would slam onto people entering, then it was so hard to open some folks had trouble opening it (especially the elderly) and then it wouldn't shut at all. It does work now, however.
It is worth noting that the US Postal Service receives no direct taxpayer funds. It relies on revenue from stamps and service fees.
It's true, light bulbs, a new sign, the repair of emergency lighting, new flags, etc. might cost money, but picking up trash around the building only costs a little time.
The only thing that remains from the opening day is the attitude of the employees behind the counter. They remain courteous and kind making a visit to the Bertrand Post Office located at 1830 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, LA 70506 a bitter/sweet experience. The community in which this post office serves and its employees deserve better.
