Administrators of U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise's Facebook account have posted an update on the majority whip's condition following surgery.

UPDATE: The shooter is dead.

10:00 a.m. The shooter is being identified as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.

Republican House majority whip and Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise is reportedly in stable condition after he was shot in the Washington, DC area. Two Capitol Police officers and a fellow representative were wounded in the attack. Rep. Roger Williams of Texas was also injured. Aides say he was able to walk away from the scene.

The shooting happened while Scalise was practicing with other GOP congressman for a charity baseball game that was set to be played tomorrow. Many news outlets are referring to this as a mass shooting. Scalise is said to have been wounded in the hip. The suspect's condition is unknown at this time but he is in custody.

Statement from Gov. John Bel Edwards
BATON ROUGE  Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards released the following statement on the shooting in Alexandria, VA that injured Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise:
“This appears to be an outrageous, cowardly attack on one of our own. Steve Scalise is a friend, colleague and fighter for the people of Louisiana. While details continue to unfold, I want to thank the Capitol Police, all the first responders and other members of Congress for their quick and heroic efforts. Reports indicate they took swift action to take down this madman and render aid. Donna and I are praying for Congressman Scalise, his wife Jennifer, their two children, Madison and Harrison, and all those who were injured. I would ask the people of Louisiana to join their prayers to mine for a quick recovery for Congressman Scalise.”

Fox News reported the suspect was seen with a rifle near the baseball field in the Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria, VA. Witnesses report that 50-100 shots were fired onto the field.

The White House responded shortly after reports of the injuries were made.
