53-year-old Kevin Davis of Lafayette is dead after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near mile marker 95, just west of Scott. It happened on October 28 shortly before 1:00 a.m.

Louisiana State Police troopers say Davis was a passenger in a Caravan that was traveling east on I-10 when it was hit in the rear by a BMW that was traveling in the same direction. This caused both vehicles to run off the road and crash into the tree line.

Davis, the driver of the Caravan and the driver of the BMW were all unrestrained. Both drivers are in the hospital in critical condition.

Troopers say it is unknown why the BMW crashed into the Caravan. That driver had no identification and his identity is still unknown.

The investigation continues as toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and results are pending. Charges are pending as well.

"Wearing a seat belt is the simplest and most effective step motorists can take to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a crash," says spokesman Trooper Thomas Gossen in a press release. "Louisiana state law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and wear a seat belt on every trip."
