Lafayette Voters Will Decide On Three Tax Measures This Year

Two property tax proposals will be on the November 6th ballot to support the Lafayette Parish Courthouse and the jail. A third tax measure, proposed by Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mark Garber, will be on a separate ballot. That sales tax re-apportionment would support the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office and Lafayette Police.

If approved, unincorporated areas of the parish would pay 1/4-cent less in sales tax. Purchases inside any of the municipalities would pay 3/4-cent more.

According to The Advertiser, the existing tax, approved in 2002 under Sheriff Mike Neustrom, generated $4.2 million in 2004 and only $4.7 million in 2017. The proceeds would be split 50/50 between both agencies.
