In a release, Lafayette Parish Schools says students will not be disciplined for taking part in the National School Walkout in support of school safety. The event is set to take place on March 14th and last 17 minutes.

Lafayette Parish administrators recognize the significance of the National School Walkout, scheduled for March 14, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Students in all schools will be allowed to participate peacefully in the 17-minute walkout without fear of disciplinary consequences. Principals are reaching out to their students and faculties in order to coordinate and organize this event. The walkout highlights the rights of teachers and students to teach and learn in a safe school environment. The walkout supports the position that change is necessary in order to provide a school setting that is free from the fear of being harmed at school.

The movement has gained steam in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Parkland, FL.
