Matthew Stafford To Become Highest-Paid Player In NFL History

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford will become the highest-paid player in NFL history.

That would put Stafford's annual salary ahead of the five-year contract that pays $25 million annually to Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, which he signed last month.

Stafford's deal is expected to guarantee him a record $92 million, including a $50 million signing bonus, which eclipses the previous record of $87 million in guaranteed money, issued by the Indianapolis Colts to quarterback Andrew Luck.

The 29-year old Stafford was entering the final year of his current deal with the Lions, and was due $16.5 million, before agreeing to the extension.

A native of Tampa, Florida, Stafford played his college football at Georgia, before being selected by the Lions with the top-overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Stafford has thrown for 30,303 yards and 187 touchdowns, which rank 44th and 49th, respectively, in NFL history.

A 2014 Pro Bowl selection, Stafford has started 109 games for the Lions, compiling a 51-58 record.
