It's been three years since a Royal Caribbean luxury liner has sailed out of New Orleans. That hiatus is about to be over when the cruise line plans to begin sailing from the Crescent City beginning with 2018's winter cruise season.

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas is expected to begin carrying passengers on vacations to Mexico and the Bahamas by December of 2018. The 2,435-passenger vessel will be the latest addition to the current cruise ships from Carnival and Norwegian that currently make the trek down the mighty Mississippi into the Gulf of Mexico and beyond.

According to the company's website, Royal Caribbean sails 24 cruise ships worldwide to destinations in Bermuda and the Caribbean, Europe, Canada and New England, Alaska, South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Itineraries from New Orleans are expected to be seven-day adventures to what the Royal Caribbean website refers to as "culturally rich" destinations in Mexico and the Bahamas with ports of call in between.
