The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns opened preseason women's basketball practice this week, and while high on all of the newcomers, there's one young lady I'm really looking forward to see play.

Andrea Cournoyer, a freshman guard from Merryville High School, should be fun to watch during the 2018-2019 season.

The 5-foot-4 Cournoyer made history in high school, scoring over 5,500 career points during her prep career.

Yes, you read that correctly; 5,500 career points!

How special is that?

Well, Cournoyer became just the eighth player in history to hit the 5,000-point mark, and only the second in Louisiana girls basketball history.

The state's all-time leading scorer is Katie Antony of Anacoco, who scored an amazing 6,190 points between 1998-2003

To score that many points over your career, you have to put incredible numbers every year, and Cournoyer did just that, averaging 32 points per game as a sophomore, 34 ppg as a junior, and 35.4 ppg as a senior.

Understand; a girls high school basketball is only 32 minutes in length, so Cournoyer averaged a point per minute for the last three years of her prep career.

Cournoyer produced against the better teams as well, as she holds 1A Top-28 singe-game and two-game scoring record with 40 and 73 points, respectively

A 5-time all-state selection by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, Cournoyer has been named to the first-team on four different occasions, along with two Most Valuable Player honors to her credit.

The Cajuns will have some quality guards this year, with the likes of returnees Jasmine Thomas, Skylar Goodwin, and Jomyra Mathis, plus some talented newcomers at the position, including Brandi Williams, Caroline Rivera, and Diamond Morrison, but Cournoyer may give them that consistent scoring threat that will likely make them a factor in the Sun Belt Conference race this coming season.

Cournoyer is only a freshman, and like all freshman, she'll suffer some growing pains. But I look forward to watching her play and mature, as she has the ability to become a special player for the program.
