Where Will UL’s Brittany Holland Play?

What position will one of the most talented newcomers for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team play in 2018?

Sophomore Brittany Holland is a talented, versatile player, who will likely see a lot of playing time this year.

Holland who played one season at Central Arizona College, was named an NJCAA first team All-American following the 2017 season, after hitting a .471, to go along with 15 home runs and 81 runs batted in.

A native of Gilbert, Arizona, Holland joined Louisiana in time for the 2018 season, and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Cajuns.

Holland's father, Brad, who is currently a scout in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, played college baseball at McNeese St. under Tony Robichaux, who is now the head baseball coach at UL.

The word on her is that can hit, hit for power, run the bases well, and play solid defense at multiple positions.

This is Division I softball, which is a different level, and you don't want to put unrealistic expectations on young players, but Holland looks to be the real deal, and one that will be a terrific player, in time.

Louisiana was fortunate to get her, especially when they got her, in December.

She will help the Cajuns, playing somewhere.

But where?

Holland played shortstop in junior college, and she could easily be a very good defensive third baseman, but we know that Gerry Glasco's plan is to play Alissa Dalton at shortstop, and we know that Kara Gremillion is the third baseman.

So, what about the right side of the infield?

That's probably the most likely possibility.

You would think that coach Glaco could pencil in Holland at second base without any hesitation, but there are a lot of good looking young players that could play there, like freshman Jolie Readeaux.

First base is also an option, but redshirt freshman Kourtney Gremillion is someone the coaching staff really likes, as is another junior college transfer Kynadi Tipler.

There's a lot of depth in the infield, but my guess is that Holland will will play a lot at first base, with Kourtney Gremillion and Tipler getting a lot of at-bats elsewhere, like at the designated player spot..

It is nice to know, however, that Holland could play any position, if needed, due to a possible injury.

Again, the coaching staff is just starting to get to know the team, and there is still a lot to sort out.

And remember; the opening day starting line-up likely won't be the same starting line-up at the end of the season.

Things can, and normally do change, quickly.

That being said, look for Holland to become a fixture in the starting line-up for Louisiana, both in 2018, and for years to come.
