The University of Louisiana at Lafayette will pay more money to lease buses from Lafayette Consolidated Government, and in exchange, the city will be held responsible for major repairs.

The City-Parish Council on Tuesday approved increasing the rate from $10,240 to $35,000 annually, and nixed a portion of the agreement that required the university to pay 20 percent of repairs.

"In this case, the additional $25,000 is payable regardless of whether we have a repair," said Chief Administrative Officer Dee Stanley.

Stanley said the agreement will be subject to review.

"If we have to do $250,000 in repairs on five buses in two years, we need to look seriously at providing this service at all, and the type of equipment that we're using to provide it," Stanley said.

The buses are an older model purchased from Gwinnett County, Georgia.
