Mandatory Evacuation Very Likely In Butte La Rose As We Brace For Floodwaters
Officials in St. Martin Parish are saying that a mandatory evacuations are highly likely, anticipating that they may be issued as early as next week. Officials are already exploring clean up efforts for their area as they prepare for record flooding levels.
St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier says all the roads in Butte La Rose will be open this weekend but could close sometime next week. When those roads close, no one will be allowed into Butte La Rose as the water is expected to rise to 29 feet - two feet higher than the previous flood in 1973. "We don't expect anyone to ride this thing out. This will surpass anything in history ever seen before," said Cormier. He estimates as 40-percent of Butte La Rose has already moved out.
