Google Honors The Birth Of Hip Hop By Letting YOU Become The DJ [VIDEO]
On Hip Hop's 44th anniversary, Google is putting you in the mix. Literally.
A new doodle on the search engine's home page is paying tribute to the birth of hip hop, 44 years ago today.
There are a few different accounts surrounding the birth of hip hop, but the most credible and consistent story puts Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc at the center of a South Bronx back-to-school party on August 11, 1973.
Kool Herc is credited as the first DJ to "extend" songs by extending the break beat of popular songs by going back and forth between two records. This allowed the people at the party to dance for longer periods of time and MC's were able to rap over the beats.
To commemorate hip hop's 44th anniversary, Google teamed up with Fab Five Freddy for a Google doodle that allows you to choose and mix between records, choose the speed of the songs, fade from song to song and you can even scratch.
As a DJ, I can say that this is one of the best explanations of DJng at its core that I've ever seen and I tip my hat to Google for honoring the legacy and the art form hip hop.
Head on over to Google now, but be warned—you may end up mixing for hours.
